Welcome to my page about business process management.

If you do a web search looking for information about Business Process Management (or BPM) virtually all the pages your search returns will be heavily focused on the Information Technology (IT) aspects of Business Process Management.

There are any number of vendors out there more than ready to sell you the latest and greatest business process management software for you to use in your business, but very few will tell you what Business Process Management really is.

Even fewer can tell you why you should implement BPM for your business.

Okay, so why should you?

Business Process Management emerged as a new discipline in the 1990's, as an extension of the lean production, continuous improvement and total quality management movements. It requires businesses to fully understand and document of all their business processes to enable them to continual seek improvements.

A process is a logical, related, and connected set of activities that takes an input from a supplier (i.e., raw materials, labour, or goods and services) adds value to them and transforms them into an output for a customer.

From this definition you could be forgiven for thinking that management activities and support activities should be exempt from business process management, but exclude them at your peril!

All of your management and support activities support your production capabilities, or if they don't, they should. Unless you include them in your BPM model, it is possible that you or your workforce will continue undertaking non-value adding activities to the detriment of your business.

Everything that is done within your business is a part of a process and processes can be managed!
