Business Plan Key Milestones

On this page you will find a more detailed summary of what you should include in the business plan key milestones section of your plan.

This is probably one of the most important sections in a business plan, and the most often omitted!

At this point in your business planning process, you have decided what direction you want the business to go in and selected objectives in each of the major areas of your operations.

The next step is to allocate responsibility for implementing the various action plans and determine how you will know that they are achieving the desired results.

What to Include in this Section

In this section you add a table that lists all of your objectives broken down to the major tasks that are necessary to achieve them.

You need to assign responsibility to someone (if you are a small business owner working alone - that would be you!) and when you expect them to have completed the task.

I would suggest that your also add a performance measure, so that you can evaluate the degree of success or failure of your planned actions.

How to Use Your Key Milestones

Your business plan should be a living document. By this I mean that you refer to it often to check that the objectives, strategies and action plans included in your business plan have been implemented correctly and that you are achieving the desired results.

If not, you need to revisit your objectives and fix anything that is 'broken'.

What ever you do, do not wait to review your progress against your goals and objectives until the end of the period covered by your plan, as it will be too late to take any corrective action at that point and you will have to start all over again with your next plan!
