Starting a Pet Grooming Business

Ever wondered what is involved in setting up a Pet Grooming Business?

Typical Services?

Pet GroomerPet ownership increases every year, but at the same time we are all working longer and longer hours and have less free time to spend grooming our pets.

This type of business offers a service where the clients pet (usually a dog, but not always!) is washed, brushed and clipped.

As an add-on some of these business also carry pet supplies and specialty products for pets.

Qualifications?

You do not need formal qualifications to start a pet grooming business, but you do have to like animals.

It also helps, if animals like you!

Some experience and familiarity with the grooming standards of various breeds is useful.

You will need to have a healthy dose of patience in your make-up and a knowledge of animal behavior is also a requirement.

Equipment?

Your basic equipment will include a grooming table, clippers, brushes, combs, shampoos, a dryer, shower accessories and hoses, and a wash tub.

If you want to do a professional job without damaging your back, top of the range equipment will set you back around $10,000.

If you are intending to go to your clients (i.e. a mobile grooming service) you will also need a vehicle large enough to carry all the equipment.

If you opt to offer a pick up and delivery service, you will have to purchase cages and or restraints to transport the animals safely in your vehicle.

Setup Costs?

Your initial setup costs will include advertising and promotional materials, including business cards, and your initial supplies (i.e. shampoos etc).

Potential Earnings?

Most grooming services charge between $30 - $60 per visit. It will probably take at least an hour or two to professionally groom a medium sized long haired dog, so don't count on doing too many each day.

If you count on doing four animals per day, your yearly earnings will be between $25,000 to $50,000.
